Gout Pain In Foot- S.O.S Advice For Fast Relief

Gout is a form of arthritis when crystals of sodium urate that our bodies produce form inside the joints.  Gout can appear on any joint of the body but mostly known on the big toe joint of the foot.

The first symptoms of gout in the foot are it becomes painful to stand and walk on, swelling appears around the joint then redness of the skin.

These symptoms can occur fast all within 24 hours and Gout generally lasts for 3-10days.

As the Gout reduces the foot and joint becomes easier the swelling and redness disappears.
Treatments for Gout of the foot are to use anti inflammatory drugs and for patients with ongoing
or reoccurring Gout your GP may prescribe allopurinol.

Advice I give to patients with Gout to prevent further attacks and to reduce Gout pain fast is,
as above seek medical advise and start anti inflammatory drugs fast.

*** Avoid footwear if possible, try using cold compression or a bag of peas to cool the foot the foot is hot and irritated so much relief can be felt doing this. ***

Help yourself to prevent gout, manage your weight and it is recommended to avoid these foods:
Tomatoes
White Wine
Beef
Turkey
Asparagus
Herring
Anchovies
Mushrooms

I get Gout S.O.S calls all the time from patients and when i get to see the foot the gout has already started the patients advise me the foot is extremely painful they cannot bare the bed sheets touching the foot, walking becomes very difficult shoes and slippers cause pain.
The big toe joint on the top and underneath the sole looks puffy and swelling is visable and the skin feels warm and inflammation is present, often redness or patchy spots are present firstly and over 24 hours the whole joint will become scarlet red.

How to treat ingrowing toenails stop embedding into skin

How to prevent toenails embedding into the flesh of the toe

Just this past week I have seen 5 ingrown toenails on new patients and am beginning to wonder
if November is Ingrown toenail month! As I am seeing lots of problem nails.

Reasons ingrown toenails occur can be from poor toenail cutting ,cutting deep down the nail edge,or from tight or new shoes pinching the big toe and embedding the nail into the skin.

Treating  ingrown toenails will depend on how severe the nail is embedded self help measures maybe possible or you may need to seek treatment from a foot health professional.

Self care measures

If you have an ingrown toenail and the skin is only slightly inflamed you can fix this and prevent it getting worse or infected.

#1 If inflammation is present you can soak your feet in salty water 2 good tablespoons of salt for 10mins in warm water.

#2 Trim the toenails “straight” across this will prevent the nail continuing to embed into the skin.

#3 Keep your feet clean, if you suffer from sweaty feet, fungus conditions clean and treat your feet with antibacterial foot powder or fungus creams, the sweat and bacteria can worsen ingrown nalls.

#4 Wear sensible comfortable shoes with a wide shoe box area do not wear shoes that pinch.

#5 If the toe is pulsating and throbbing from pain apply an iodine spray like Savlon dry and take pain killers such as paracetamol  this will relieve pain .* If in doubt ask your GP.

When infection and pus is present this is a result of a jagged edge or split nail embedded into the toenail , a bloody fleshy mesh covers the side of the nail and is very painful.  At this time  Doctors often prescribe antibiotics to cure the infection but these will not cure the ingrown toenails only when the piece of nails is removed this toe will recover and the infection will go.
